Market Dynamics and Operations - reports to the Executive Board meetings

This report was presented to the 13th session of the Executive Board, on 10 November 2010. It contains the most recent data on the performance of Operations Unit, including an overview of the HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis portfolio; it provides more recent updates on project progress related to 2009, including major 2009 key performance indicators, and on other project related activities, such as the trends in patients treatments and market lever. It finally indicates that funds are being largely spent in low income countries with high DALY rates (disease burden), and the challenges regarding the transition of UNITAID support to alternative more sustainable funding sources. Some major achievements, by niche, include:

Tuberculosis

  • Nearly 1.5 million first- and second-line treatments provided to patients in 72 countries.

Malaria

  • Nearly 120 million malaria treatments provided.
  • 20 million malaria-preventing bed-nets distributed.
  • 26 metric tonnes of Artemisia produced under the A2S2 project.

HIV/AIDS

  • Achieved cumulative price reductions of up to 80% on leading paediatric HIV/AIDS medicines.
  • Treated 355 000 children living with HIV/AIDS; in other words, 8 out of 10 children globally.
  • Over 100 000 adults living with HIV are receiving quality second-line medicines.
  • Reduced the price of second-line treatment for HIV from US$ 1500 per patient per year in 2006 to an average of US$ 450.
  • Tested more than 4 million pregnant women for HIV
  • Supplied treatment to over 700 000 pregnant women who tested positive for HIV to prevent transmission of the virus to their infants.
