While working directly with global health implementers on its grants portfolio, UNITAID also maintains a number of close relationships with other agencies on the basis of shared mandate and common goals. These ‘partners’ comprise all organizations working on HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria, such as the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, the Global Fund, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership.
In addition, UNITAID has special relations with the Medicines Patent Pool and the Millennium Foundation, two Swiss-based organizations UNITAID helped to create.
Medicines Patent Pool
The Medicines Patent Pool was created with UNITAID support to increase access to quality affordable medicines for HIV/AIDS by negotiating with patent holders to share their intellectual property with the Pool. The Pool then licenses patents to other producers to facilitate the production of affordable generic medicines well-adapted for use in resource-limited settings.
The Millennium Foundation mobilizes private sector support for UNITAID. It works directly with top global industries to associate their brand with UNITAID’s success stories through corporate support programmes. Companies that wish to support UNITAID can partner with the Millennium Foundation to develop a tailored philanthropic model that best suits the relationship.
