Denis Broun took up the post of Executive Director of UNITAID on 12 September 2011. He brings to UNITAID a strong experience built on policy dialogue and field experience. He has worked in the fields of public health and health economics for the past 25 years and has established strong links with a large network of partners in government, civil society, private sector, foundations and international organizations.
Prior to joining UNITAID, he was Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia with UNAIDS, after having been director of partnerships for UNAIDS in Geneva and UNAIDS Country Coordinator in India. He has long experience of UN organizations, having been chief of health for UNICEF in New York and director of resource mobilization at the World Health Organization.
However, his main area of work has been in pharmaceutical policies, notably as senior specialist for the pharmaceutical sector at the World Bank, European director of Management Sciences for Health and a former board member of a private Indian generic company and an American Foundation working on access to medicines in Africa.
Denis holds a medical degree from the University of Paris and a specialization in tropical medicine and epidemiology. He also graduated from the Paris Institute of Political Sciences. In addition to his native French, Denis speaks English, Russian, Spanish and some Hindi.
