The right medicines for children living with HIV

>Visit project page

Challenge:

Children living with HIV left behind due to lack of suitable treatments.

Response:

Create the market for HIV paediatrics: incentivize producers to make child-friendly medicines to replace sub-optimal treatment; increase access to "fixed-dose combinations" that make adherence for children easier; reduce prices.

Results:

  • Overall price reductions of 80% on key paediatric antiretrovirals (ARVs) since the start of the project in 2006.
  • Started over 439,000 children on treatment.
  • Approximately 98% of these children are on fixed-dose combinations.

Sisters

Sisters Srey Nga and Soy are HIV-positive and their lives depend on the drugs they take every day and night – available thanks to UNITAID. Click above to see how UNITAID created the market for HIV pediatrics in Cambodia.
