More children born without the HIV

Challenge:

1,000 babies are born with HIV each day due to the lack of integrated programmes to prevent transmission of HIV from women to their children during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding.

Response:

UNITAID has pioneered integrated prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS with testing, ARV treatment, medicines to cure opportunistic infections and ready to use therapeutic foods for mothers and children.

Results:

  • 8 million pregnant women tested for HIV in high burden countries.
  • Over 1.3 million infants tested for HIV using early infant diagnostic tests (PCR-based).
  • Over 850,000 anti-retroviral treatments provided to HIV-positive pregnant women.
