Support to scale-up of ACT treatments

UNITAID and its partners are helping increase access to ACTs by providing a sustainable financing model. UNITAID is promoting greater competition in the ACT market, thereby fostering lower prices, by sending a signal of its long-term commitment and sustainable funding for ACTs. UNITAIDs target is to treat 55.87 million cases of malaria by 2010-2011.

UNITAIDs commitment to the affordable medicines facility for malaria (AMFm)

The Affordable Medicines Facility for Malaria (AMFm) is a new initiative that aims to provide affordable, effective and quality-assured ACTs for the public and private sectors in malaria affected countries, with the ultimate goal of pushing substandard and in-effective medicines out of the market. UNITAID is providing a crucial funding commitment to help test out the scheme.

ACT scale-up for Burundi and Liberia (closed)

UNITAID, in partnership with UNICEF and WHO, supported the rapid delivery of about 720 000 ACT treatments to Burundi and 680 000 to Liberia over the months between March and December 2007. This 'emergency' project was designed to prevent a shortage of ACTs at the end of a Global Fund grant for the two countries.

Scaling up bed net coverage

The availability of bed nets in low-income countries with high malaria prevalence has never been adequate, with the purchase and distribution of bed nets taking as long as two years. With its first investment in prevention products, UNITAID is aiming to respond to this situation. UNITAID is ensuring long-term sustainable funding that will result in a much more steady supply of bed nets.

Artemisinin and ACT demand and Supply Forecasting

At its January 2009 ad hoc meeting in Geneva, the UNITAID Board mandated the UNITAID Secretariat to commission a global ACT forecasting services. The Secretariat, recognizing the need to include related activities, broadened the service to include ACT and Artemisinin supply and demand forecasting at global level and AMFm specific. The crucial role of forecasting services has also been strongly recommended by RBM and other partners and by participants of the AMFm workshop for Phase 1 countries, held in Nairobi, Kenya in February 2009.
